That Osmo Vänskä – pictured here (right) at the Sibelius Hall in Lahti, Finland, with BIS A & R Director Robert Suff – now steps down as chief conductor of the Lahti SO does not, however, mean that his collaboration with BIS is at an end. Presently music director of the Minnesota Orchestra, Vänskä has already recorded a highly acclaimed Beethoven symphony cycle with his new orchestra (the last instalment soon to be released) and other recordings will follow, such as those of Bruckner’s Fourth Symphony and Beethoven piano concertos with Yevgeny Sudbin as soloist. The BIS collaboration with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra also continues with a projected disc of symphonies by Valentin Silvestrov, conducted by the orchestra’s new artistic adviser, Jukka-Pekka Saraste.

Semyon is with WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln for concerts and a recording of Wagner’s Lohengrin. This recording follows a string of highly successful discs from Semyon and WDR. With Johan Botha in the title role, the cast includes Anne Schwanewilms, Kwangchul Youn, Petra Lang and Falk Sruckmann.
Amadé (04.06.2008, 22:08): Nicht zu früh freuen! In den letzten Monaten kam so viel Entbehrliches auf den übergesättigten Beethoven-Markt. Ein neuer Name befördert zwar die Diskussion, zieht jedoch nicht zwangsläufig 1a-Einspielungen nach sich. Erst einmal abwarten.

Rachmaninov (05.09.2008, 22:10): 14 Discs in 7 Years Following his recent debut at the BBC Proms – described as ‘sublime’ in the Daily Telegraph (UK) – Yevgeny Sudbin took the opportunity to prolong his exclusive contract with BIS. He will record 14 discs over the coming seven years. The Sudbin-BIS collaboration has so far resulted in three hugely-acclaimed solo recitals with works by Scarlatti, Rachmaninov and Scriabin, as well as a concerto disc which combines the first works in the genre by Tchaikovsky and Nikolai Medtner. On the strength of these, and his many live appearances, he has already been hailed as ‘potentially one of the greatest pianists of the 21st century’. The next title, a coupling of Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No.4 in its original version and Medtner’s Piano Concerto No.2, will be released in Spring 2009.
